When a massive killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Long Island, it’s up to the local police chief, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.
According to director Steven Spielberg, the prop arm looked too fake in the scene where Chrissie’s remains are discovered, so instead, they buried a female crew member in the sand with only her arm exposed.
According to writer Carl Gottlieb, Roy Scheider ad-libbed the line “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Over 67 million people in the U.S. went to see this film when it was initially released in 1975 (just under a third of the country’s total population at the time), making it the first summer “blockbuster.”
Composer John Williams conducted the orchestra during the 1976 Academy Awards, so when it was announced that he won the Oscar for Best Score, he had to run up to the podium to accept his Oscar and then run back to continue conducting the orchestra.
