Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
Friday - Sunday,  February 5 - 7
Starring Judith Hoag, Elias Koteas & Josh Pais

Enjoy the 30th Anniversary of the four famous turtle warriors' Big Screen debut on The Strand's giant screen in 45 speaker surround sound!

Four teenage mutant ninja turtles emerge from the shadows to protect New York City from a gang of criminal ninjas.

Through contact with a mysterious ooze, four turtles in the sewers of New York mutate into intelligent pizza-loving humanoids, and are mentored in the art of ninja combat by the wise rat Splinter. When the evil Shredder attempts to take over the world, the turtles set out to stop him.

Originally, Director Steve Barron wished to replicate April O'Neil's jumpsuit look from the early Mirage comics and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. The look was going to more closely resemble the cartoon with a yellow colored jumpsuit and a big head of red hair (as opposed to a green jumpsuit and brown hair). However, Judith Hoag found the jumpsuit "horrifying" and the idea was nixed. The yellow raincoat April wears in the beginning of the movie is an homage to the yellow jumpsuit she wears in the 1987 cartoon.

Judith's reaction to the jumpsuit idea may have been an omen of things to come. She was not asked to reprise the role of April O'Neil in the film's sequels, reportedly due to her incessant complaining, particularly about the six day shooting schedule and the amount of violence in the film.

To help disguise how cumbersome and slow the turtles' costumes were, dialogue scenes were shot at 23 frames per second so that when they were played at the normal speed of 24 frames per second they appeared a bit sharper. For the same reason, fight scenes were shot at 22 or 23 frames per second.
