In National Lampoon's Vacation, Chase creates the
iconic character of Clark Griswold for the first time: a hapless
dad who tried to deliver a traditional family vacation
experience for his stressed out wife and obnoxious kids!
All the cast members had terrible experiences when it came to
filming the scenes inside Walley World, where they rode all of
the roller coasters and other rides.
Chevy Chase stated
that many of the rides made him and the others, especially since
they all had to ride them several times for each take. Dana
Barron said
that the coasters made her so sick, she had to take motion
sickness pills, and would pass out on nearby benches between
takes. Even Anthony
Michael Hall admitted
that in the shots on the roller coaster, where he looks scared,
he wasn't acting. His fear in those shots was genuine.
In Spies Like Us, Chase and Dan Aykroyd play two
bumbling government employees who think they are U.S. spies,
only to discover that they are actually decoys for Nuclear War.
This movie was inspired by Bob
Hope and Bing
Crosby's
"Road" movies, thus explaining Bob
Hope's cameo appearance of less than thirty seconds, playing a
round of golf through a tent.
In Caddyshack, Chase leads an all-star ensemble cast
including Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight. He
plays filthy-rich playboy golfer, Ty Webb, who's recruited to
play in a team golf tournament in which an illegal wager could
force out an obnoxious new member (Dangerfield) of an exclusive
golf club.
