Purple Rain | Jul 26 & 28

July 26 / 7:30 pm & July 28 / 2:00 pm

Starring Prince, Apollonia Kotero and Morris Day

On the 40th anniversary of its theatrical release (to the weekend), experience the groundbreaking film that shot Prince into the realm of superstardom, back on our enormous 30′ screen in true digital HD and 39 speaker surround-sound!

A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, even as his star begins to rise.

The story is based loosely on Prince’s own life.

A few days before the premiere, Prince had a nightmare that Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert despised the film, with Ebert ripping the film apart. He said, “I dreamed those two guys on the TV were reviewing the movie and that fat guy was tearing me up!” Siskel and Ebert both loved the film in their reviews.

When The Kid’s father is playing the piano, the piece, titled “Father’s Song” — which would serve as the interlude for “Computer Blue”, performed in the next scene — is actually being played by Prince. In addition, the piece was composed by Prince’s father, John L. Nelson.
