The Best Christmas Movie You Never Heard Of |
Starring Don DeFore, Ann Harding and Charles Ruggles
This delightful story from 1947 about two homeless men that move into a mansion while its owners are wintering in the South is probably the best Christmas movie that you never heard of!
This movie COULD have been as iconic as It’s a Wonderful Life. In fact, Frank Capra’s Liberty Films acquired the story in 1945 as was scheduled to direct. Later that year, producer-director Roy Del Ruth acquired the story. Capra was still set to direct until he optioned to direct It’s a Wonderful Life instead! Initially, this film was a greater commercial success than Wonderful Life. The oddity that occurred was Wonderful Life accidentally falling into the public domain, and received TV airplay for decades because stations didn’t have to pay any licensing fees. This raised the profile of Wonderful Life to iconic status while It Happened on 5th Ave fell into relative obscurity. But, trust us, you and your family will love it!
Every winter, Michael J. O’Connor, the second richest man in the world, vacates his 5th Avenue mansion for his winter home. Every winter, Aloysius T. McKeever, a homeless man, moves into vacated mansions. This particular winter, McKeever meets Jim Bullock, an army veteran recently evicted from his apartment, and offers to share the mansion. It’s not long before the mansion has a few more guests, including two of Jim’s army buddies, their wives and children; runaway heiress Trudy Connor; her mother, and even Michael J. O’Connor, himself
